Disa uniflora also known as the Pride of Table Mountain. A terrestrial orchid that grows along mountain streams and in the spray of waterfalls.

The red disa is unscented and relies solely on the mountain pride butterfly to pollinate it.

Part 3 of my spring flower series.

This building on Bromwell Street in Salt River used to belong to the City of Cape Town. It’s part of the Salt River Market site that was allocated for affordable housing in 2008. This year all the vendors have been relocated and some excavators have appeared but it is hard to believe that the affordable housing will actually be built after 18 years of delays.

Painting flowers for Spring. Part 2.

This flower is part of the protea family. It’s called Mimetes cucullatus, or Rooistompie. It’s the only mimetes that survives fire by resprouting from a large woody rootstock underground.
