Constitution Hill has a rich history as a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court.
The site also housed a women’s prison and Nardstar* was asked paint portraits to celebrate the female activists that were held there.
As a result portraits we painted of (in order) Cecilie Palmer, Lillian Sere, Mally Mokoena, Zubeida Mayet, Joyce Dipale, Khayo Mafuna and Mmagauta Molefe.
